POL2097: International Institutions
International Institutions is a political science class that teaches students about the role of international governance in the modern world, and includes a week-long trip to Brussels, Belgium, and The Hague, Netherlands.
Experience Summary
My experience, which included a semester-long course and a study tour, focused on international law and institutions worldwide, as well as their impact on global governance. The course, a three-credit-hour class with only nineteen students, provided a comprehensive perspective on the evolving international law regime and how institutions enforce and uphold the principles of the regime. Throughout the course, I learned about institutions such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the European Council, and the European Committee, among many others, all of which I had the privilege of visiting in person during the study tour portion of the experience.
The study tour was a week-long trip to Brussels, Belgium, and The Hague, Netherlands, two of the biggest cities for international institutions and cooperation. I had the opportunity to visit a variety of government buildings, primarily those of the European Union and the United Nations, and hear from expert speakers about the work being done at each institution. I gained a great deal of knowledge from both the course and the trip about the inner workings of international government, as well as the application of law abroad, which was my primary interest when I entered the program. The entire experience helped me become increasingly well-rounded, both culturally and academically, and I would not have traded the experience for the world.

Research Paper
The final assignment for the course was to write a research paper about a topic of one's choosing that was relevant to the coursework and subjects. For my paper, I chose to write about the International Court of Justice and its role in prosecuting human rights violations. The paper can be accessed simply by clicking the button below, which will take you to a PDF version of the text.
