UHP Discover
UHP Discover is a full-time summer undergraduate research program offering non-STEMM majors valuable research opportunities. Students are matched with a faculty member who guides and supports their research project. Beyond gaining valuable research and analysis skills, students also attend a professional development workshop series to build career-related skills.
Experience Summary
As a participant in UHP Discover, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a summer in Cincinnati working on a project that will forever hold a special place in my heart. I was selected to be a student researcher under faculty member Dr. Michael Loadenthal, who runs the Prosecution Project (tPP), "a long-term, Open-Source Intelligence research platform tracking and providing an analysis of felony criminal cases involving illegal political violence occurring in the United States since 1990" (tPP, https://theprosecutionproject.org/). As a student researcher, I supported tPP by coding legal cases from start to finish in our team spreadsheet and making them publicly available for academics and professionals worldwide to reference. I spent hours learning about cases, reading court documents (including indictments and judgments), and coding cases for specific variables using decision trees. Through this work, I developed strong attention to detail and analytical research skills, which have already proved beneficial in the few weeks since I finished my time with tPP.
Working on the Prosecution Project taught me a lot about our country and its legal system, including some of the benefits and drawbacks of our judiciary and its organization. The research I conducted exposed me to every step of the legal process, as well as the reality of political violence across the United States. The work I did was not always easy to digest, and I often struggled with the reality of the content. However, as someone hoping to enter the legal field, it gave me the candid insight I needed to better understand our legal system. Part of being a Global Citizen Scholar is recognizing when something is insufficient or unfair and considering how to address flaws to benefit society as a whole. UHP Discover has helped me build on these Global Citizen Scholar skills, and I am grateful for the insight it has given me into the judiciary.

One of the best aspects about the Prosecution Project is that all the data compiled by the team is publicly available! Data is located in an online database on the tPP website and can be downloaded for further review and use by those interested.
