Experience Summary

Intermediate Composition Honors is the only University Honors Program seminar offered that is an honors section of a regular course offered at UC. For my major, I am required to take two English courses in order to graduate. Intermediate Composition Honors covers my second requirement and was the first English class I had taken since high school. The course is designed to encourage students to reflect on communication and how we interact with one another in our communities. This included learning about literacy, discourse communities, genres, ethnographic studies, and much more. Throughout the semester, we engaged in various activities, both in the classroom with our peers and online, that aided in our learning, such as annotating articles and perfecting rough drafts. By the end of the semester, each of us had strengthened our understanding of how communication differs by community and why it is so important to recognize how we communicate.

This experience not only allowed me to learn more about communication in general, but also to reflect on how I communicate with the various organizations and groups I am part of. From my immediate family to my coworkers, I was given the opportunity to learn how my words, tone, and genre choices impact my audience and shape my literacy. The course encouraged me to explore how I have developed my own communication style and what influences my choice of how to interact with my communities. As a Global Citizen Scholar, it is essential that you understand how your input impacts those whom you meet, help, or work with. This experience taught me the importance of understanding how communication choices affect outcomes and can both help and harm, which has allowed me to strengthen my concept of a Global Citizen Scholar. A Global Citizen Scholar not only understands the important of their communication choices, but is deliberate with their communication in order to gain the best outcome for all those involved.

Work Sample

Throughout the semester, we worked on two major assignments. The first was a first-person literacy narrative about an experience that shaped our literacy development. Our second was an ethnographic study on a discourse community. While both projects were interesting yet challenging, I felt that my ethnographic study better reflected the skills I developed throughout the course.
